5 things to look out for at Sawai Gandharva 2019 other than great music

Come December and the rasiks - an audience who enjoys the nectar of art- pull out their woollens to prep watching hours of singers, musicians and dancers at the Sawai Gandharva Festival or the Pt. Bhimsen Joshi Mahotsav. Sawai Gandharva is known to most of us as Bhimsen Joshi's guru, his real name was Rambhau Kundolker. A Kannadiga by birth, he hailed from the the village of Kundol in Dharwad. He was a known to be a handsome man with a meditative, caressing voice which may be observed with Bhimsen Joshi's singing style. Though he was trained at a Kinara gharana (gharanas is a method of social organisation of the Hindustani classical music, each gharana has features of throw, clarity, breath, melody etc) he adsorbed nuances from several stalwarts of the time. This was much to the dismay of his mentor Abdul Karim Khan who was the founding artist of the Kinara gharana. The free spirited Sawai, embraced all and it is only fitting that he lives on in the cool winter breeze of the valley whispering to us an encompassing tale of decades. I sipped on my gavati chaha (lemongrass tea) and wandered through the human fireflies their souls glowing on receiving this musical relay among the artists.
If you miss these nights the rest of the year you can lay your hands on the Sawai 1992-97 recordings at the Music Lovers store in a USB drive for Rs 2499.

We had this year with us a few more artists who brought the simple things to us for our everyday life.

AntraArts

A mother daughter duo brand, family businesses always get me favouring them. AntraArts was started in 2016 by Antra Thackeray who holds a diploma in Textile Design from S.L Raheja, Worli, Mumbai. Her daughter Durga, a mandala artist, helps behind the scenes with social media, production, sales etc.

Inspiration comes to Antra naturally and mostly from the works for her father, very popular artist -Mr. Vishwanath Palnitkar. They have cushion covers, spiral bound fabric notebooks for your music notes and my favourite hand embroidered handkerchiefs which last you back to your childhood.
Stop by and pick up a tote for your singing class books and buy their hand embroidered stoles to keep warm this year at Sawai.
